Am I a Visitor or Resident on the Internet

I am definitely a visitor on the internet when it comes to my participation in social media.  I don’t think social media is weird; however I do have concerns about privacy. I perked up when the moderator said he uses social media more for educational connections and that in his private life he is more a visitor than a resident. I agree that I have a different perspective on its use for education. I previously wanted access to the tools that would advance my capacity on specific issues. Now, I am beginning to realize that some of social media offers infinite possibilities and connections to information and people.  In that vein, I used the internet as a tool and I would rifle through it to locate the tool that I thought best met my needs at the time.
I admit that I find using social media very time intensive and I probably need to develop better filters so that I get the most benefit from the tools I need and not waste time reviewing everything that comes my way. Developing a wholesome PLN could be a solution for me. Developing an appreciation for the social media and its advantages is a better long range goal. We have been introduced to so much so quickly that I am trying to put my head around it. My pace is snail-like which frustrates me because I have sold the advantages of technology to the public most of my life as an AT&T employee. I know the benefits. I have young adults living with me who use most of it on a daily basis. My husband who needed help powering up a computer loves Facebook because he connects with his family all over the country.
My goal now is to use self talk and convince myself that these media are less time consuming to accomplish my goals because I can connect globally in minutes rather than days or hours via email or telephone. I can reach communities of people who have knowledge and data and experience in subjects important to me.

  1. It is interesting to see your thought process unfold in the space of this blog. I think your positive "self-talk" is rubbing off on me already. Especially with regards to the ability to "reach communities of people who have knowledge, data and experience". That is definitely a plus.
